VQA Vinemount Ridge $37.15 (307686) 13.0% alcohol
Lively aromas leap from the glass—piquant spice of cinnamon and ginger mingling with earthy and mineral notes galore. There’s a laser-like streak of red fruit on the palate—cranberry, passionfruit and pomegranate—riding a stream of tang and acidity that’s ameliorated on the back palate by riper red cherry and raspberry. There’s a lick of tannin throughout the dry finish and aftertaste. Aerate/decant for three hours before serving with coq au vin or cassoulet. Careful cellaring for two or three years should also be rewarded. (Vic Harradine)

Fruit-forward aromas of dark cherry/berry and black plum abound on the nose. It leads on the palate with a burst of acidity expressing itself as tang–infused red currant and passionfruit interlaced with notions of Montmorency cherry and saline minerality. It opens up on the mid-palate with riper dark cherry fruit and black currant while the acidity lessens a tad. Pour with red pizza with mushroom, bacon and pepperoni or spaghetti with Bolognese sauce.
