VQA St. David’s Bench, Niagara Peninsula $67.00 375 mL (413724) 9.5% alcohol

As one would expect from one of Niagara’s most respected, most admired wineries, this is quite special. It’s lusciously sweet with enough racy tang to provide balance, restraint and elegance. Aromas of ripe orchard fruit—apple, floral notes, pear and honey—introduce a delightful wash of ripe, sweet palate flavours—Bosc pear and red apple complemented by honey, mineral notes and racy lemon tang on the lengthy finish and aftertaste. Bachelder Niagara Chardonnay 2015
VQA Niagara Peninsula $24.95 (302083) 12.5% alcohol
Buttered popcorn, nectarine and yellow apple aromas shape the nose of this cool-climate, 100% chardonnay. There is richness on the palate with ripe pear, baked apple, butterscotch and smoke-tinged flavours nicely balanced with lemon curd and mineral notes. This is medium-full bodied and truly delicious with creamy Brie or Camembert with roasted nuts. (Louise Boutin)

Coyote’s Run Pinot Noir 2016
VQA Niagara Peninsula $19.95 (53090) 12.5% alcohol
This is very pale garnet with aromas of tart red cherry, bay leaf, a gamy note and a suggestion of strawberry in the background. On the palate, the tartness of red cherry and cranberry flavours combined with still-evolving young chewy tannin awaken the palate and trail into a racy savoury finish. Aerate/decant three hours and pour alongside a rare-grilled flank steak now to 2022. (Louise Boutin)

The mature and complex nose offers aromas of dry fruit, leather, tobacco, licorice and ripe black cherry in the background. The palate suggests flavours of tart red cherry and pomegranate mingling with soothing sweet dried fruit, followed by grippy tannin and pleasant mineral notes in the finish and aftertaste. Cave Spring ‘CSV’ Riesling 2015

VQA Beamsville Bench $29.95 (566026) 11.5% alcohol

Fruit sourced from the low-yielding, +30-year-old vines was used to produce this well-crafted riesling displaying wonderful balance. High-toned aromas of lemon peel, white grapefruit and honeysuckle on the nose segue to crisp green apple, tangy citrus and a lasting mineral finish on the palate. Medium-light-bodied, it’s off-dry with a streak of racy acidity providing balance. Enjoy with spicy tuna tartare. (Lisa Isabelle)

Featherstone ‘Select Late Harvest’ Gewürztraminer 2016

VQA Vinemount Ridge $24.95 (519033) 12.0% alcohol

Produced with grapes picked in December, this sweet wine is concentrated and luscious. Aromas of pineapple and lychee are accented with honey, beeswax and rose petals. Medium yellow in colour, it’s full bodied and mouth-coating offering sweet fruit flavours of peaches in syrup and pear compote balanced with racy citrus—lemon and grapefruit—extending through the long, tasty finish. Stratus ‘Wildass’ Riesling 2016

VQA Niagara Peninsula $17.95 (129700) 11.0% alcohol

Sharp spice and floral aromas waft from this just-barely off-dry, value-packed, Niagara riesling. It streaks across the palate with great élan, blood orange, tart lemon-lime, notions of white peach and flinty minerality mingling with white peach and ripe pear. Henry of Pelham ‘Estate’ Cabernet/Merlot 2012

VQA Short Hills Bench $24.95 (395855) 14.0% alcohol

The intensely concentrated fruit character of this blend of the cabs and merlot showcases fruit from Henry of Pelham’s older vines—with fruit concentration reflected in the lovely, ripe, lifted aromas of forest berries intertwined with notes of vanilla, spiced rose and dried herbs. Dry, medium-full bodied, this offers a defined structure and deft balance of firm ripe tannin, clean acidity and well-integrated oak. There’s a rush of flavour across the palate—ripe berry, cherry and plum accented by vanilla notes and spice. The flavourful dry finish is lingering and balanced. This puts forward very appetizing aromas of ripe pear, vanilla, mild oak and a fresh tropical twist of pineapple and banana notes. The palate is treated to a rich mouthfeel of red apple, vanilla and poached pear flavours lifted by persistent tangy pineapple defining the delightful finish. This medium-full bodied beauty inspires a roasted chicken and grilled-pineapple pairing. (Louise Boutin)

Kistler ‘McCrea Vineyard’ Chardonnay 2015
Sonoma Mountain, Sonoma County $119.95 (353706) 14.1% alcohol
Finesse and elegance come to mind to describe this gem. The inviting nose—fragrant white peach, vanilla, nutmeg, lightly toasted oak and a touch of caramel—sets the table for an opulent palate of ripe stone fruit flavours, Meyer lemon and complementing minerality. The finish is delightful with delicate buttery and dry apricot notes. This full-bodied treat deserves a decadent partner; try lobster ravioli in a light cream sauce. (Louise Boutin)

Lake Sonoma Chardonnay 2014
Russian River Valley, Sonoma County $26.95 (541557) 14.5% alcohol
Aromas of ripe peach, vanilla, oak, smoke and a touch of lactic scent introduce layers of nicely balanced flavours of ripe orchard fruit and apple compote with a ginger bite. This full-bodied white offers a lingering peachy finish with well-integrated alcohol and oak notes. This is an excellent companion to roast ham and scalloped potatoes. (Louise Boutin)

Baking spice, oak, pear and apple aromas abound. A medium-full bodied, generously textured surge of tangy lemon curd and Key lime interweave with baked apple and spice along with hints of grapefruit pith on finish and aftertaste. It’ll all come together with another 12 months in bottle, rewarding patience handsomely. Pour with fall squash soup. (Vic Harradine)

Decoy Merlot 2015
Sonoma County $35.95 (460642) 13.9% alcohol
This red blend from the Duckhorn wine family is 92% merlot, 4% cabernet franc, 2% cabernet sauvignon and 2% petite sirah. It has a charming complex nose—purple plum, prune, clove and fresh red bell pepper aromas abound. A juicy wash of ripe black cherry, tangy raspberry and dark chocolate flavours flood the palate shortly joined by polished tannin and tangy acidity leading to the dry fruit-forward finish. This will evolve further with additional cellaring. Pour now to 2025 with a sun-dried-tomato pasta. Aerate/decant two hours before service. (Louise Boutin)

Seghesio ‘Sonoma’ Zinfandel 2016

This zinfandel has a dash of petite sirah, perpetuating a family tradition at this 120-year-old winery. The lovely nose—plum compote, cherry pie filling, blueberry and a delicate hint of violet—prepares the palate for a silky-textured flood of flavour with perfectly ripe purple plum, juicy dark cherry with layers of dry cocoa and black peppercorn adding texture and complexity through the delicious, lengthy, warm finish. Aerate/decant for one hour pouring alongside grilled rack of lamb; also enjoy as an excellent after-dinner sipper. (Louise Boutin)

Francis Ford Coppola ‘Director's Cut’ Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

Alexander Valley $37.95 (61002) 14.5% alcohol

This annual blockbuster has a red berry nose with notes of dry earth and leaves. There’s lots of action on the palate with chewy tannins and flavours of cherry and fruity jam. It's all nicely balanced with tart acidity. Put this one in the cellar until 2020. Or enjoy it today—decanted for three hours—with a thick steak, juicy rare. (Dave Isaacs)

This has a lifted nose of dark briary berry, oaky notes and peppery spice aromas. It envelops the palate with medium-plus bodied, generously textured surge of rich luscious black raspberry and black currant jelly intertwined with espresso roast, sweet vanilla, black licorice and dark, bittersweet chocolate galore. The lingering finish and aftertaste replay palate flavours with gusto. Pour with grilled back ribs, grilled striploin or beef fajitas. (Vic Harradine)

Sonoma Coast $34.95 (719435) 13.5% alcohol

Sweet, ripe fruit is front and centre in this rich, luscious Pinot showcasing good depth and plenty of charm. Aromas of sweet vanilla, baking spice, mint and ripe black cherry unleash a medium-weight, well-textured flow of bramble berry jam and cherry clafoutie coating the palate garnished with toasty/oaky notes, a hint of milk chocolate and vanilla. Rodney Strong ‘Sonoma County’ Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

Sonoma County $25.95 (226944) 13.5% alcohol

This is another well-chosen ‘Wine of the Month’ selection by Vintages. Dark cherry/berry fruit and mixed spice aromas provide segue to a balanced, well-paced and well-priced Sonoma cab. It shows depth and plenty of flavour with ripe black raspberry and juicy dark Bing cherry enveloping the palate infusing the finish with gusto. This is full bodied with good texture and fruit-filled aftertaste flecked with balancing tang. (Vic Harradine)

Hedges Family Estate Red 2005
Red Mountain, Columbia Valley $79.95 (1594) 13.3% alcohol
This Bordeaux blend—36% cabernet sauvignon, 61% merlot, 3% cabernet franc—was sourced from three different vineyards on Red Mountain. It shows its maturation with a deep garnet robe. Mesmerizing aromas of potpourri, dry fig, tobacco, licorice, baking spice and smoky notes fill the air. The flavour profile revolves around dried fruit, cedar, Christmas cake spice and tangy red cherry framed in firm yet polished tannin and balanced acidity trailing into the lingering, dry finish. This is bold with a distinctive personality. It’s also a great match with rare prime rib au jus. (Louise Boutin)

Kaiken ‘Las Rocas - Ultra’ Malbec 2015

Mendoza $19.95 (50849) 14.5% alcohol

This perennial favourite dishes up a full-bodied, generously textured mouthful of ripe dark fruit and a boatload of glorious tang at a terrific price. Black Bing cherry and juicy black plum mingle with balancing pomegranate decorated with mixed spice on the palate. The cherry and plum replay on the finish bolstered by juicy tang, firm structure, baking spice and dark coffee. Pour with a thick, rare-grilled beef tenderloin. (Vic Harradine)

Weinert Cabernet Sauvignon 2006
Mendoza $25.95 (656363) 14.5% alcohol
The deep garnet colour and the intriguing nose suggest this wine has some age. The aromas are complex and varied—dark berry fruit, prune, spice, tobacco, violet, mushroom and a balsamic note. The full-bodied palate is bathed in flavours of blackcurrant and dark cherry with notions of dried fruit, cloves, forest floor and mint. It’s dry, well-structured with apparent tannins and bright acidity. This will benefit from a three-hour aeration/decant before serving medium-rare, grilled steak. (Lisa Isabelle)

Secreto de Viu Manent Sauvignon Blanc 2016
Casablanca Valley $14.95 (540823) 13.0% alcohol
There’s a secret in this bottle—it contains 15% of an unknown grape variety in addition to the 85% sauvignon blanc. Expressive aromas of asparagus, tinned peas, hay and citrus bound from the glass. Dry and light-medium bodied, tart lemon and grapefruit flavours merge with green papaya and fresh herbal notes before racing across the palate to finish mid-length with mouth-watering tang. Pair with a goat cheese and arugula salad. (Lisa Isabelle)

• The following 2015 Terra Noble ‘Gran Reserva’ Carignan is 100% Carignan and single-vineyard sourced with vines averaging 50 years old. It aged 12 months in two and three-year-old French oak barrels followed by a further 6 months in bottle before release.

Terra Noble ‘Gran Reserva’ Carignan 2015
Maule Valley $18.95 (542118) 14.0% alcohol
Fresh and fruity, this interesting red opens with aromas of blackberry, strawberry and candied cherries with floral and spice notes. Shy on the palate, flavours of juicy red cherry, dark plum, spice and vanilla are slowly revealed. It’s dry, medium-full bodied with firm tannins and finishes medium-long with a spiced fruit aftertaste. Enjoy with spiced, slow-roasted pork. (Lisa Isabelle)

Australia: White Wine

• Fruit for the following Wakefield Chardonnay was sourced from their Estate vineyard in cool-climate, Clare Valley. It was picked at night, taken directly to the winery, chilled and whole-bunch pressed; after settling, most was fermented in French oak barrel, only 10% new, and stayed on lees a short four months, with the oak nicely integrated at bottling.

Wakefield Wines ‘Estate’ Chardonnay 2016

Clare Valley $15.95 (711556) 13.5% alcohol

This offers a generously textured, mouth-filling stream of crisp, refreshing flavour from twist top to final drop of the lengthy finish and aftertaste. Aromas of tropical fruit, ginger and nutmeg abound. They precede a medium-full bodied, tapestry of palate-bathing flavour—white nectarine, apple pie spice, nutty notes and gorgeous lemony tang. It’s well balanced, well priced and delicious. Long story short—pick up a few. (Vic Harradine)

McLaren Vale $21.95 (534750) 14.0% alcohol
Lifted aromas rise from the glass of this purple-hued red blend—dark berries, spice, black pepper and a dusty mineral note. Dry and medium-full bodied, it showcases good structure, firm tannins and clean acidity. Lifted, concentrated berry fruit flavours and spice dazzle the palate persisting through the lengthy, dry finish. Serve alongside grilled red meat. (Lisa Isabelle)

Woodside Park Vineyards Pinot Noir 2016
Adelaide Hills $20.95 (478289) 13.5% alcohol
The Adelaide Hills is arguably South Australia’s premium cool-climate, red wine area and is located between the Barossa and McLaren Vale. Aromas of cherry and cranberry merge with spice and a prominent menthol note on the nose then segue to a mouth-watering flow of tart red fruit, spice and sweet vanilla on the palate. Dry, medium-light bodied with barely detectable tannins, a sweet strawberry note appears on the mid-length finish. (Lisa Isabelle)

Huntaway ‘Reserve’ Sauvignon Blanc 2014
Marlborough $19.95 (536276) 13.0% alcohol
This was made by Matt Large, former head winemaker at Kim Crawford. The nose is marked by uplifting fruit and vegetal notes—gooseberry, pineapple, grapefruit, asparagus and green pea aromas. Dry, mid-weight with a crisp and clean texture, the palate offers vibrant sweet citrus and pear flavours extending through the lengthy finish. Pair with pan fried white fish under a squeeze of lemon. The Grinder Pinotage 2015

WO Western Cape $13.95 (269076) 14.0% alcohol

This always finds its fair share of fans and detractors. Aromas of dark-roast coffee bean and tar—induced from heavily toasted oak barrel—and black cherry/berry aromas set the table for a smorgasbord of palate flavours with black currant and boysenberry jam intertwined with mocha, grilled savory herbs and dark bittersweet chocolate. Pour with grilled/smoked back ribs slathered with spicy barbecue sauce. (Vic Harradine)

France: White Wine

Roche de Bellene ‘Les Charrons’ Meursault 2009
AOC Meursault $82.95 (541235) 13.5% alcohol
This 100% chardonnay from a prestigious appellation shows lovely evolution with its deep yellow colour and aromas—apple compote, ripe pear, fennel, a wisp of vanilla and wet rock minerality. Full malolactic conversion combined with ageing in French oak barrels, 40% new, bring roundness and complexity on the palate. Ripe Bosc pear bathed in a buttery vanilla syrup and lemon rind paint the flavour profile until a savoury mild bite of almond skin wraps the long elegant finish. This is medium-full-bodied and delightful with pan-seared scallops and saffron cream sauce. (Louise Boutin)

France: Red Wine

Châteaux Haut-Lalande 2015
AOP Blaye Côtes de Bordeaux $19.95 (546069) 14.5% alcohol
This value-laden, Wine of the Month is a red blend of 85% merlot, 10% cabernet sauvignon and 5% malbec. It exudes aromas of ripe, black fruit, cherry and blackberry, along with cassis and delicious notes of freshly baked vanilla cake. The fruit is tart on the initial palate with suggestions of red cherry and red plum followed by ripe black plum, a vanilla replay, and a surprising peppery note on the finish and aftertaste. This is a crowd pleaser, medium-full bodied with integrated oak, mellow tannin and is a good match for red meat or pork with a spicy twist. (Louise Boutin)

AOC Haut-Médoc $49.95 (527101) 13.0% alcohol
This left bank, Bordeaux blend is +75% cabernet sauvignon from vines averaging 40 years old. It aged 12 months in barrique, 25% new. This now mature wine showcases a complex bouquet with aromas of barnyard, leather, prune, smoke, tobacco and distant black-fruit notes. Fruit blossoms on the palate with blackberry and cassis joined by savoury herb and smoky notes trailing in the long finish and aftertaste. It’s medium-full bodied with a solid backbone of tannin and acidity. Seize this opportunity now to taste aged wine still offering the vitality to serve with rare magret de canard—aerate/decant only one hour before service. (Louise Boutin)

Domaine Ninot ‘Vieilles Vignes’ Mercurey 2015
AOC Mercurey $38.95 (534388) 13.0% alcohol
This 100% pinot noir from AOC Mercurey—in the Burgundy sub-region of Côte Châlonnaise—offers a classic nose of red cherry, savoury herb, a gamy note and a suggestion of pretty violet. Vibrant red cherry and pomegranate flavours flow over the palate before joining with bay leaf and mushroom persisting in the delectable, earthy finish. This is medium bodied with good backbone and perfect with a wild mushroom and blue-veined cheese, pasta dish. (Louise Boutin)

AOC Crozes-Hermitage $19.95 (537811) 13.5% alcohol
This fruit-forward, 100% syrah shows ripe black fruit aromas of plum and blackberry with hints of licorice and savoury black olive. Similar flavours on the palate enhanced with cassis, peppery notes and still-evolving firm tannin complete the profile leading to a fruity/peppery finish. Aerate/decant two hours and enjoy this medium-bodied red now to 2020 with steak tartare. (Louise Boutin)
