Henry of Pelham ‘Cuvée Catharine’ Non-Vintage
VQA Niagara Peninsula $29.95 (144873) 12.0% alcohol
There’s an array of aromas with lemon tart, toast, apple and pear among them. Well made and well priced, this delivers a persistent mousse of mid-small bubbles coupled with a crisp, refreshing attack on the palate. Flavours of zesty lemon, pineapple and ripe pear abound while the aftertaste is racy and lip-smacking good. Pour as an aperitif or with all manner of appetizer—on par with most Champagne at a lot less money. (Vic Harradine)

Miguel Torres ‘Santa Digna Reserve’ Cabernet Sauvignon 2008
DO Curico, Central Valley, Chile $14.95 (177451) 14.0% alcohol
This is a Vintages Essentials product, always available in select stores—at $13.95 until November 7, 2010. Involved aromas of smoke, earthiness and mocha make way for a delightful wash of flavour on the palate with lively, red berry fruit and savoury cassis predominant. The perceptible tannin provides structure while the moderating acidity offers balance and a dry, refreshing aftertaste. It’s mid weight, nicely textured and good value. (Vic Harradine)
