The bronze-coloured liquid is certain to catch your eye whilst the sweet, rich flavours and lengthy finish will catch your interest. Robust aromas and flavours of spice, caramel and raisin abound in this medium-bodied, well-balanced Port. Taylor Fladgate ‘Fine White’ Port

That's correct, 'white' Port. It's a tad sweet, but that's okay because you add ice and mix it with a splash of tonic and a sprig of fresh mint or citrus slice to make a refreshing aperitif. It has hints of apple and fig flavours with a focused spine of citrus acidity that keeps it crisp and refreshing. It's high octane—20% alcohol—moderation required. (Vic Harradine)

When you spot ‘Lustau’ on a wine label, it’s akin to a gold seal of approval. This perennial favourite is showing toffee, raisin and caramel on the nose coupled with a most scrumptious mélange of sweet fig, raisin and nutty flavours. Dense and intense, deftly balanced, the effect is amazing. Serve this dessert wine chilled; either on its own or matched to crème caramel, crème brûlée or any manner of dark spiced fruit cake. Bollinger ‘Special Cuvée Brut’ Champagne

This has great sense of purpose with a fine-bead mousse. It rides a streak of lemon curd and Key lime garnished with minerality, blood orange and honeyed pit fruit, the latter making an appearance on the clean crisp and refreshing finish and aftertaste. Crafted in the traditional method from 100% Pinot Noir, this refined sparkler spent two years on the lees. It dazzles the senses with subtle notions of red field berry, warm brioche, elusive floral notes and lively citrus. The mousse is fine, creamy and persistent, the acidity racy and refreshing. Tawse Vineyard ‘Limestone Ridge - Spark’ Riesling Brut 2012
VQA Niagara Peninsula $19.95 11.5% alcohol
Aromas of apple, minerality and floral notes open this stunning bottle of bubbles. There’s a streak of Granny Smith apple, tangy citrus and slate/mineral slashing across the palate, interlaced with lemon-lime, crisp, refreshing and mouth-watering good. There’s plenty of texture and structure throughout. The lingering aftertaste is clean and lip-smacking while layering on hints of ripe pear and racy lime. (Vic Harradine)

Hidden Bench Chardonnay 2012
VQA Beamsville Bench, Niagara Peninsula $28.95 (68817) 13.5% alcohol
Full flavoured and fully textured, this jumps out of the gate with aromas of baked apple and nutty notes. A complex gusher of palate-coating flavour—toffee apple, poached pear and lemony acidity—meld magnificently, replaying and producing a balanced and beautiful finish and aftertaste. It’s mid-full weight, with dense and concentrated flavour. Not for the faint of heart, it’s good to go now and on to 2018 and it pours exceptionally well with festive bird or roast pork. Hidden Bench ‘Terroir Caché’ Meritage 2010

This Bordeaux blend, primarily Merlot, offers rich luscious aromas of smoky oak with dark berry fruit and hints of spice. A tsunami wave coats the palate with a tapestry of bold flavour—juicy black cherry and blackcurrant interweaving with black licorice, espresso roast and baking spice. It’s medium-plus weight with generous mouth feel and a persistent finish of excellent acidity and a solid underpinning of still-evolving tannin. Tuck away; pop corks 2017 to 2025. (Vic Harradine)
Le Clos Jordanne ‘Village Reserve’ Pinot Noir 2011

Enticing complexity graces the nose and palate of this wine. Aromas and flavours of red fruit, earth, spice, herbs and smoke mingle to tantalize the senses. Dry, medium bodied, the fine structure includes defined tannin and clean acidity, while an underlying mineral quality lifts the fruit. Harmonious and deftly crafted, the wine has a lasting finish. Osoyoos Larose ‘Le Grand Vin’ 2009
VQA Okanagan Valley $44.95 (626325) 13.0% alcohol
Exotic incense, earthy notes and black plum compote aromas herald a Bordeaux blend that’s predominantly Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. It’s layered, full-bodied, fully textured and full of promise—pop corks 2018 – 2023. Savory herbs, dark berry and cherry fruit robed in spice, sweet vanilla and a cloak of tannin coat the palate infusing the lingering aftertaste. Patient cellaring should be handsomely rewarded. Roasted savory herbs and gamy notes dominate the aromas in this medium-bodied, nicely textured Pinot. Flavours of rhubarb/strawberry pie interlace with cranberry and piquant spice tinged with savory herbs and still-present tannin on the palate and aftertaste. Beringer ‘Private Reserve’ Chardonnay 2012

This is rich and luscious with a spice-infused flavour and very long, delectable finish and aftertaste. Charred toast and orchard fruit along with citrus notes and notions of tropical fruit dominate the nose of this full-bodied gem. It streams over the palate with a complex, creamy smooth river of melon, ripe apple and pear interweaving with baking spice, excellent lemony acidity and grilled pineapple. Château St. Jean Fumé Blanc 2012

Fresh lively aromas of lemon acidity and pit fruit—white peach and nectarine—trumpet a rich wash of ripe pear, and red apple interlaced with notions of melon, buckwheat honey and lemon curd. Francis Coppola ‘Diamond Collection Gold Label’ Chardonnay 2012

Gorgeous aromas of toffee, floral notes and baking spice introduce a balanced and beautiful, palate-bathing wash of mandarin orange, lemon zest and some flinty notes. La Crema Chardonnay 2012
Sonoma Coast, California $25.95 (962886) 13.5% alcohol
The majority of fruit was French-oak barrel fermented then aged for four months with lees stirred during that time. Caramel, peach and spice aromas herald rich luscious flavours of lemon pie, toffee apple and white nectarine. It’s mid-full bodied with creamy smooth texture, great balance and fruit forward. Aromas of caramel, nutty notes and honeydew melon set the table for a salad bowl of flavour with blood orange, honeyed pit fruit and lemon pie filling to the fore. There’s a good deal going on in this complex, full-bodied bruiser. Aromas of dark raisin, Christmas cake spice and dark berry fruit abound. Domaine Tournon ‘Shay’s Flat Vineyard’ Shiraz 2012
Pyrenees, Victoria $37.95 (311480) 14.0% alcohol
Michel Chapoutier, the terroir-driven doyen of the Rhône Valley, has become well known in Australia for his accomplishments with cool-climate Shiraz. An alluring nose of roasted herbs, and fresh, lively red and black berry fruit aromas set the stage for a bold, savory-scented wash of racy red currant and sour cherry interwoven with sweet-tinged mulberry and black plum garnished with wisps of pipe tobacco and earthiness. This behemoth of a red is rich, dense and concentrated, full bodied and fully textured. Aromas of black berry fruit and Bing cherry interweave with licorice and tar on the nose. Bramble berry pie and mulberry preserve coat the palate garnished with kirsch liqueur, sweet vanilla and notions of minty notes. The warm finish lingers forever, fruit forward and jammy. Penfolds ‘Bin 2’ Shiraz/Mourvèdre 2012

An 89% Shiraz, 11% Mourvèdre blend, this jumps from the glass with a rich nose of fresh red berry fruit, charred toast, black licorice and mixed spice. It’s medium weight with generous mouth feel and a persistent delivery of red and black plum/cherry/berry fruit adorned with coconut and dark bittersweet chocolate. The dilemma now becomes how to educate the public so Golden Mile Bench becomes as well known as Sonoma or Napa—only one appellation may appear on the bottle! The 2012 Hypothesis is a blend of big, bold Okanagan Merlot (57%) with the Cabernets—this fruit benefits from a warm vintage. Aged 16 months in French oak, it offers complex aromas of cedar, cassis, plum, spiced vanilla and pipe tobacco. It’s a brawny youngster, dry, full bodied, with a fresh texture.
