Vintages Release: December 11, 2021

Fortified Wine: Port

• The label of the following Sandeman 20-Year-Old Tawny Port can be confusing, as can every vintage-dated Tawny Port. There are four common age-related designations for Tawny Port: 10-, 20-, 30- and 40-year old. However, the total wine inside any is not that exact age. The designations are highly regulated and judged by a tasting panel. They are judged to be, ‘of the quality and appearance that a 10, 20, 30 or forty-year old Tawny should exhibit’. When in Porto, I met with a winemaker involved with these regulations and was told there are a variety of vintages in each bottle, some older, some younger and some, by chance, the age of the designation. Wines are tasted blind and either rejected or accepted by the panel of expert winemakers. My understanding is, the average age of the wines that are accepted, are almost always somewhat older than the designation indicated on the label.

Sandeman 20-Year-Old Tawny Port

DOP Porto $61.95 (116178) 20.0% alcohol

Tawny Port gains its name from the tawny colour as a result of many years aged in barrel—resolving tannin and imparting a silky-smooth, lip-smacking experience. Aromas of burnt sugar and spice abound on this medium-full bodied, nicely textured gem. It blankets the palate with an über-sweet river of orange marmalade, treacle and butterscotch toffee. This is creamy smooth and pours well with fruit flan, crème caramel or soft white cheese. (Vic Harradine)

Dessert Wine

• The following 2017 Bodega Alvear ‘Pedro Ximénez de Añada’ is a dessert wine, technically not Sherry—although grapes from this region are used for the base wine in making PX Sherry as the designated ‘Sherry triangle’ doesn’t have sufficient PX grapes. It’s not fortified, but rather it’s fashioned from grapes laid out to dry and raisin in the sun on mats, then pressed, fermented and finally aged 12 months in traditional earthenware jars called ‘tinajas’, see photo below—it’s absolutely delicious. The Alvear family got their start in 1729 and it’s still family owned and managed—now by 50 Alvear family members.

Alvear ‘Pedro Ximénez de Añada 2017

DOP Montilla-Moriles, Spain $24.95 375 mL (499152) 16.0% alcohol

This is pure ambrosia, nectar of the gods. It’s slightly dark-hued in the glass. Aromas of dried fruits—date, fig, molasses and raisin—abound on the nose. The palate’s treated to a sweet, not cloying, almost stunning surge of blackstrap molasses, buckwheat honey and light maple syrup mingling with orange zest, currants, notions of vegemite, toasted almonds and roasted pecans. It magically turns dry almost tangy on the finish and aftertaste as it counterbalances the sweetness. It’s hi octane, so better to pour into small dessert wine glasses. This pairs well with your palate as the dessert, or, if you wish, mince-meat tarts, butter tarts or dark fruit cake. (Vic Harradine)

Specialty: Fruit Wine

Southbrook Framboise Non-Vintage

Product of Ontario $19.95 (341024) 375 ml 14.0% alcohol

This 100% raspberry, fortified, sweet dessert wine is simply stunning. If they allowed such designations, it would be amongst the Premiers Crus. The lifted nose is a bowl of freshly-picked raspberries while the full-bodied and flavour-packed taste profile is more of the same. This is well balanced and tang laden. It’s an amazing accompaniment to rich, dark Belgian chocolate chunks or fruit flan desserts. (Vic Harradine)

Dessert Wine: Mead

90drink now Exceptional Value!

The Lyme Bay ‘Moniack Mead’ Non-Vintage

United Kingdom $19.95 (987263) 14.5% alcohol

The history of mead—made by fermenting honey and water—goes back as far as 8000 years. This particular brand is wildly popular and extremely sought after around the world. In the glass, it has hues of deep golden brown. There are predominant aromas of honey and beeswax with secondary notions of honeydew melon, clover and burnt sugar. It’s full bodied, sweet in the mouth—stops well short of being cloying—with flavours of caramel, honey, and apple. Enjoy by itself after dinner or with home-baked apple pie. (Dave Isaacs)

Sparkling Wine

Flat Rock Cellars ‘Twisted’ Sparkling Wine 2020

VQA Ontario $19.95 (14421) 12.5% alcohol

Lifted aromas of Key lime, apricot and pear precede a sweet and tangy surge of palate flavours carried along on a vigorous mousse of small-bead bubbles that include racy lemon and white grapefruit juxtaposed with a balancing surge of ripe nectarine and sweet-ish lime cordial. It’s nicely balanced, crisp and mouth-watering refreshing on the palate, finish and aftertaste. This is a very well-priced, vintage-dated, Charmat-method fashioned bubbly that you may want to try and to keep on hand for drop-in friends and neighbours. (Vic Harradine)

• And now for something completely different. The first Australian ‘sparkling shiraz’, although it was called ‘Sparkling Burgundy’, was made in the State of Victoria in the late 1880’s by French winemaker, Auguste D'Argent, at the Victorian Champagne Co. In the following multi-vintage Bleasdale Vineyards ‘The Potts Family – Sparkling Shiraz’ you’ll find that a modified Solera system has kept this wine as fresh as a daisy and there’s wine in the bottle you’re drinking from as far back as 1997 and from every vintage until the latest in 2020. This latest vintage has a splash of Malbec. It’s not sweet or cloying, in fact it’s delicious, dry and tangy. Give this a go; you’ll be pleased you did.

It finishes lengthy with persistent purity of fruit from palate replays. Pour on its own to welcome guests or with roast duck. Remove from the frig twenty minutes before service. (Vic Harradine)

• The following 2020 Featherstone Estate Winery ‘Four Feathers’ is an alluring blend of 62% riesling/20% sauvignon blanc/15% gewürztraminer/ 3% chardonnay. It was hand and machine harvested then juice yield was pressed and transferred into 100% stainless steel fermentation tanks. After eight hours of juice fining and settling it was then racked off gross lees. Charred toast, dark cherry/berry fruit and exotic incense aromas precede a tang-laden river of palate flavours with racy, crunchy pie cherry and passionfruit underpinned by still-evolving tannin. This needs patience and careful cellaring from now to 2023. This is medium-bodied with good texture and plenty of good reasons to be patient. If you lose patience aerate/decant this for three hours. ‘Patience is a virtue Possess it if you can Found seldom in a woman Never in a man’ by William Langland in the late 1300’s. (Vic Harradine)

• The following 2019 Jaraman Shiraz was sourced from estate vineyards in Clare Valley where the winery is located and McLaren Vale noted for their peppery Shiraz. The wine was matured in a mixture of coopers’ American oak hogsheads—30% in 1 year old and 70% in 2-3 year old for an average of 12 months before being bottled. There were some extreme weather conditions during the growing season, including the lowest temperature recorded in spring and the highest ever temperature in summer, but overall, the vines showed great resilience and wine quality is strong with intense flavours and colours across the classic Clare Valley varieties. In McLaren Vale, the conditions leading up to vintage 2019 were dry. These conditions, in combination with a hail event in November and hot weather in January and February resulted in both an overall reduction in harvest yields along with a corresponding increase in fruit flavour profiles intensity.

• The following Henry of Pelham ‘Speck Family Reserve’ Baco Noir is quite special. Baco Noir is an especially successful hybrid grape amongst a small number that could be called ‘highly successful’ and possibly stands alone when referred to as ‘elegant, stylish or distinguished’. However, I believe this wine flirts with all three descriptors. It’s sourced from a single vineyard ‘Block 106’ that the Speck brothers planted manually by shovel in a somewhat less than perfect pattern as it meanders somewhat rather than the usual row after row after row of perfectly aligned vines, posts and trellis wire. The first vines were planted in 1984, making them over 30-years-old when harvested for this wine. This matured in a combination of new, second-fill and third-fill American oak barriques then partially finished in 5000L oak foudres for a combined 12 months.

This lighter-styled beauty keeps the final sip as fresh and lively as the first—it’s not cloying or over the top and that’s not a common occurrence for vidal icewine. A nicely balanced flow of palate-bathing apricot jam and white nectarine meet nirvana with a healthy dollop of lemon zest and racy blood orange on the palate and persists through the lingering finish and aftertaste. • The following Gérard Bertrand ‘cote des roses’ Rosé is a work of art. The base of the bottle has a rose carved out of the glass by a young designer from Ecole Boulle and the winery suggests you handle it as you would a bouquet of roses, especially when presenting to someone before pouring. This wine is also a Vintages Essentials wine, always seasonally available in select stores. This was fashioned by a traditional blend of the Languedoc—grenache/syrah/cinsault. These three grape varieties were harvested and sorted separately with each at the peak of ripeness. At the winery they were destemmed, cooled to 8 °C then transferred to the press where only the first high-quality juice is retained for this wine. It is then fermented over 15 to +30 days followed by a light fining then bottled.
