Aconcagua $18.95 (45864) 14.5% alcohol
The grapes for this dense opaque Merlot were hand harvested from estate vineyards then aged in new French oak for 8 months. It’s medium-bodied with soft tannins, mild but sufficient acidity and a persistent fruity finish. This is a real crowd pleaser. Viña Seña 2006
Aconcagua, Chile $79.00 (520551) 14.5% alcohol
Following the Bordeaux tradition, owner Eduardo Chadwick has created his own unique blend—55% Cabernet Sauvignon supported by Merlot, Carmenére, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. Premium fruit is hand harvested early morning, yields are limited to 3 tons per acre and the wine sees 18 months in new French oak barrels. The vineyards are in process of biodynamic certification. This thoughtful and precise approach leads to a fabulous wine! Subtle and complex aromas of cedar, ripe dark fruit, soft herbs, anise and fine floral notes herald an intense dry wine characterized by concentrated dark berry and plum fruit, spice and earthy tobacco notes that carry through on the lengthy finish. Velvety ripe tannins, fresh acidity and a fine persistent finish create a harmonious and hedonic package. Definitely age-worthy. A few bottles remain in the LCBO or order by the case for daily office or home delivery from Lifford Wine Agency. (Susan Desjardins)
